Setting up Snort 3.0.0 on Ubuntu 14 and 16

A big thanks to our wonderful Snort community member, Noah Dietrich, who was gracious enough to write an installation and setup guide for Snort 3.0.0's most current build (as of today) (b241).

We placed this on the Snort.org Documents page under "Snort Setup Guides".  If you are interested in getting started with Snort 3.0's latest build, please check it out.

Snort 2.9.7.x installation guide for Fedora 22 has been posted!

Snort Installation Guide for Debian 7.6 has been posted!

Thanks to Jason Weir of our Snort Community who contributed this document, a set up guide for Snort 2.9.6.2 on Debian 7.6.

Snort 2.9.3.1 Installation Guide for OpenBSD 5.1 has been posted

William Parker has been cranking them out.  Today I added his installation document for Snort 2.9.3.1 on OpenBSD 5.1.

Great job Bill! Fantastic work.

I also have a NetBSD installation guide that has provided me, however, some patches are needed for Snort in order to make it run, so we are reviewing those patches and when they will be put into Snort.

I've had some questions recently where the "translated" documents are. They've all been removed as many of them were ancient (Out of good conscience I can't let you install Snort 2.0.1), so I'm now accepting any new translation documents that people would like to submit. Tips for the format and installation command lines for the software can be found in any of the english guides.

Snort 2.9.1 Installation Guide for RHEL 6.1 has been released

Thanks to Randal Rioux for producing his awesome installation guide for RHEL 6.1 Server x64 for Snort 2.9.1.

Not only does Randy display how to set up Snort 2.9.1, but also includes the instructions for Barnyard2.  Nice work.

Snort 2.9.1 Installation Guide for CentOS 5.6 has been released

Thanks to Nick Moore for producing his awesome installation guide for CentOS 5.6 for Snort 2.9.1.

One of the biggest changes of note for Snort 2.9.1 that troubled people in the past was all the compile tags that we recommend that you build in.  The recommended configuration was to download the VRT ruleset and use the compile tags at the top of the snort.conf included in that ruleset and compile Snort with those options.  So, in order to ease the pain of installation of Snort, we took those compile options (except for the rule performance monitoring and preprocessor monitoring compile options) and built those in by default.

Building Snort with the recommended options is as simple as "./configure" now, in addition, if you want to enable the performance monitoring for rules and preprocessors, just add the --enable-sourcefire compile tag to your configure line (./configure --enable-sourcefire) and you'll have the same Snort build we use here at Sourcefire.

Snort 2.9.0.5 setup on Mac OSX Posted

Christoph Murauer, one of the Snort community has written a series of blog posts (in both German and English!) on his site that detail the setup of Snort 2.9.0.5 on Mac OSX.

As always, Sourcefire or Snort.org does not warrantee these results and we have not tested them, so your milage may vary.
